Norris

Norris was established by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to provide housing for the workers that built Norris Dam in 1933.  The intention was for the town to be a showcase for rural electrification, decentralized industry, and town planning.     Norris was a “company town”.  TVA owned almost everything:  homes, gas station, cafeteria, auto repair shop etc.  In 1948, TVA sold Norris  to a private corporation, which in turn, resold individual lots, homes, and businesses to private owners.

Norris is now a white collar suburb of Knoxville and Oak Ridge.  Increased activity at the nearby Interstate 75 exit 122 has brought more of the commercial conveniences to Norris while leaving the original New Deal community relatively untouched.

The charm of Norris becomes evident when you drive into the center of Norris, past the “Commons” (a large open field), the Pavilion (a covered picnic shelter), the Middle School, Police & Fire Hall, Restaurant, Post Office, and Grocery Store and Cafe.  Sidewalks seem to be along side every street and children actually walk to school!

Norris  Lions Club has been part of Norris for over 50 years.
